Two Happy Nomads Living On The Open Road

Going from Brown to Pink – It’s Easier Than You Think

Quite a few months before leaving for our road trip, I decided I wanted to color my hair PINK. David had come across an “inspiration” photo and showed it to me, and it had me determined to transform my hair. After all, there likely won’t be another time in my life I can freely ROCK pink hair. It definitely wouldn’t have gone over well with past employers! My hair was dark brown at the time, and I thought it would be as simple as one visit to the salon to transform it! I was wrong about that part, but because that’s what I thought, I waited until almost the last minute before we left for our trip to research local stylists experienced in “fashion colors” on Instagram, and I found one I wanted to work with; Sam at Salon Pure in Flowery Branch.

Hair Treatment #1 – Flowery Branch, GA

After Appointment #1

I messaged Sam, and turns out it was going to take multiple sessions of gradually lightening my hair before it would be to the point of the inspiration photo I sent her. I didn’t message Sam until May 8th and based on the photo, she recommended an in person consultation to find out if we would be able to get the desired results. I scheduled that for May 13th, and that’s when I was told it would take multiple visits to get my hair light enough for the pink, with 3 to 4 weeks between each appointment to give my hair time to handle the whole process.

With our tentative leave date being June 1st (it ended up being pushed back to June 9th), I didn’t have time for multiple weeks of appointments before I left. Sam sent me the photo below of the rose pink color she would be able to get me to in one visit, but that’s not what I wanted, so I ended up making an appointment with her on May 30th for balayage – a technique where hair color is painted onto the hair to create a graduated, more natural-looking highlight effect. Sam got my hair as light as possible with one visit.

My plan from there was to continue the process of lightening my hair along the way on our trip. I would wait a month or so, and when we got to a sizable city, I would research hair salons and make an appointment to lighten my hair even more.

Hair Treatment #2 – Salt Lake City, UT

After Appointment #2

Just over a month on the road, on July 15th, we were in Salt Lake City and I researched salons finding Cake Hair Salon. I called them on the 14th and they were able to fit an appointment in for me on the 15th. I was lucky to have an awesome stylist, Emily, and she did a bomb job! I told her about my goal of going pink, and she highlighted my hair the traditional way, making it look balayage to blend. She then put an awesome toner on it to offset the bronze tones that naturally want to come through my hair with it being so dark brown naturally. I was SO happy with the result, and she told me that within one or two more treatments, I should be able to go PINK!

Hair Treatment #3 – Missoula, MT

After Appointment #3

I waited a bit longer than I would have liked for my 3rd treatment, but in early September we arrived in Missoula, Montana, and I got on Google Maps to find a salon. I found Fabrik Salon in walking/biking distance and made an appointment with Jessica for September 10th.

I BIKED to my appointment, can’t say I’ve ever done that before! I met Jessica and began discussing my hair goals, and she assured me that after she highlights my hair, it would be light enough for the final step… PINK! I was so excited. She did an awesome job highlighting and toning my hair.

I knew David and I would be in Missoula a little over a month (the longest we’ve stayed in one place since we’ve been traveling), so I was able to schedule an appointment with Jessica for my pink hair transformation. She showed me color swabs so I would know exactly what to expect. She mixed hot pink and a lighter pink for the desired result.

Hair Treatment #4 – Missoula, MT

After Appointment #4

On October 14th, our final day in Missoula, I went back to Jessica for my final appointment! When I arrived, she confirmed I still wanted to go pink and went to mix the colors we previously selected. She came back, put the color on my hair, gave it time to process, and rinsed it out. It was a much quicker process than highlights, I was in and out within an hour and a half. I was thrilled with the results! It turned out way better than I could have expected.

Jessica had some color leftover and generously gave it to me to take along with me and mix in my conditioner to prolong the pink – she said to expect it to last roughly a month.

Pink Hair Care

One thing I didn’t know is that hot and warm water will strip the pink right out of your hair. This wasn’t the best thing to learn since I love a steaming hot shower, but pink hair is worth it. Although it does mean I’m dry shampoo’s new biggest fan and now actually wash my hair about once a week when I washed it every single day back when we lived in an apartment and not a travel trailer. Batiste Dry Shampoo is my dry shampoo of choice.

The first time I washed my pink hair, I mixed the color into my conditioner and it was an absolute mess. The color had been stored in a Dixie cup and that was the first problem. It became soggy and almost impossible to mix in a bottle with my conditioner. I used it that one time and then tossed it. NOT WORTH IT.

Back to not washing your pink hair in hot water… apparently hot water opens your hair cuticles allowing the color to easily escape. Who knew? I don’t have much experience coloring my hair. Well, we were staying at Firebrand Hotel in Whitefish, MT a week after I had my hair done, due to a heating issue in our BasecampX, and this is where I made a rookie mistake. The hotel had an outdoor hot tub. I love hot tubs, especially in cold weather. I got in without pulling my hair back thinking nothing of it until I woke up and looked at myself in the mirror the next morning and realized my mistake – the pink on the ends of my hair was completely stripped out from the HOT water and chlorine. I was super bummed, but I had a solution!

Celeb Luxury

Celeb Luxury’s Viral And Gem Lites shampoos and conditioners are a miracle product! I found them on Instagram and honestly thought the results from their products may be too good to be true, but let me tell you, I was wrong!

I ordered Vivid Hot Pink Colorwash. It is daily hydrating color depositing shampoo with bond rebuilder. It refreshes and maintains color in 2-5 minutes, and creates color on bleached and color treated blondes and browns in 2-5 minutes. For medium and dark brown hair, the result is best when your hair has some highlights, and for extra hot pink hair, you can re-apply and use daily.

Celeb Luxury offers multiple vivid color options as well as pastel shades (for blondes). You can also mix colors for a unique look. Their Gem Lite line offers natural colors. If I had known how well this product works, I could have skipped the step of having my hair professionally colored pink at the salon, but whether you want to use this product to color your hair or for touch ups, this product is the way to go.

Each product is $35 On their website (linked above). I was so happy with the results of their product, I decided to become an affiliate. If you choose to try one of their shampoos or conditioners, use my discount code amandaleigh20 at checkout for 10% off your purchase. Trust me, you will not regret using this product. In fact, if I ever grow tired of pink, I’m planning on trying out another color they offer.

L’Oréal Colorista

If you’ve read this far, you’re really interested in adding some fun color to your hair, so I’m going to share with you a fun way to add some temporary color as well. David and I were at Wal-Mart and found this product by L’Oreal for less than $10 just a few weeks before my appointment to “go pink.”

I decided to try it just to get a good idea of how pink would look on me. It’s super easy to use, and sprays on just like hair spray. David did it for me, just be careful not to get the spray on your counter/furniture/clothes. I put an old towel around my shoulders.

I would only recommend this to test a color out before you commit to permanent color, or for an event. It sprays on like hairspray and it feels like hairspray, so it won’t be the best texture to brush and style. It also comes off on everything so be careful!

If you’re thinking of coloring your hair pink or a different fashion color, I hope this post helped you! Will you have to lighten your hair first, and will you have your hair colored at the salon first or jump straight to Celeb Luxury’s awesome products? I would love to know! If you try Celeb Luxury’s shampoo or conditioner, post a before and after photo in the comments, I would love to see the results and I’m sure readers will too. In the meantime, fashion hair is fun hair, have fun with the process!
